Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
