We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love our partners.
A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
