TikTok Grants Users Control to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Personal Streams

Users will soon have a fresh option that enables them to reduce the amount of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the platform announced that it now features over 1 bn AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a full-scale release. This advancement aligns with a increase in content created by AI, spurred by new content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Recent reports that approximately one in 10 of the quickest rising content creators on a popular video site only show AI-generated videos. A large amount of this content is classified as “AI slop”, a phrase for poor-quality, factory-style content that is frequently illogical or dreamlike.

Based on user feedback that a lot of users appreciate content made with AI tools, from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we intend to offer the community the option to see more or less of that, depending on their own likes,” commented a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The platform disclosed that there are currently over a billion videos on its service labeled as AI-generated. In total, over 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the platform each day, making clips made by AI a relatively small portion of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be capable of limit or boost the volume of AI-generated videos they view by opening the “manage topic” option in the platform and choosing AI-made media. Further subjects that are already be controlled under the filter include current affairs, clothing, aesthetics, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its rules mandate users to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it bans harmful deepfakes of celebrities or emergencies. Any realistic AI video that is without a tag can be deleted under its community policies.

Additionally, the platform will henceforth apply an “AI-made” watermark to content made using its own AI tools, or flagged by an cross-platform project for recognizing artificial media. This measure is designed to stop users from trying to circumvent the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is also launching a two million dollar educational fund for experts and groups to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will benefit educational bodies dedicated to educating programming and robotics.

Platform Protection

TikTok has supported its safety measures, following discussion over proposals to cut jobs for hundreds of review team members in the UK. It is expected to cut 439 jobs in its trust and safety department in London, with worker representatives and internet security professionals expressing worry that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead stated that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but automated tools can safeguard staff by removing the most graphic content before it is viewed by staff. The company stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content reviewed by human moderators over the previous year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to balance humans and technology to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to minimize viewing of harmful content as swiftly, which is where a significant AI assistance is proving valuable process content quickly.”
